When Is a German Shepherd Full Grown?

By Tailculator Editorial 4 MIN READ UPDATED 2026-06-10

A German Shepherd is full grown at about 2 to 2.5 years, even though it reaches most of its adult height much earlier. Like other large breeds, a Shepherd hits close to its final height by around 12 to 18 months, then keeps adding chest depth and muscle through its second year. So a one-year-old can look tall and lanky and still have a lot of filling out left to do.

Key facts

The German Shepherd growth chart

A German Shepherd grows fastest in its first six months, then slows steadily. The weights below are typical “about” ranges, since published month-by-month weights vary by line and individual; the adult height and weight figures are the AKC breed standard and profile. Males tend to sit at the top of every range and females at the bottom.

When does a German Shepherd stop growing?

A German Shepherd stops growing taller at about 12 to 18 months, but it is not truly full grown until roughly 2 to 2.5 years, when the chest broadens and the muscle fills in. Vetericyn’s growth guide notes height is largely set by 12 to 18 months while body composition keeps changing toward the third year. Females generally finish a little earlier and smaller than males.

That long growth window matters for the joints. The breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so do not over-exercise a growing pup: skip forced running, repetitive jumping, and hard stairs until the growth plates have closed. Keeping a young Shepherd lean takes load off forming joints. You can see the breed’s full size, weight, and lifespan numbers on the German Shepherd breed page.

Common questions

At what age is a German Shepherd fully grown? About 2 to 2.5 years. It reaches near-adult height by 12 to 18 months, then spends its second year adding chest depth and muscle before it is truly full grown.

Do female German Shepherds stop growing earlier than males? Yes, slightly. Females tend to reach their adult size a bit sooner and finish smaller, standing 22 to 24 inches versus 24 to 26 inches for males, per the AKC breed standard.

At what age does a German Shepherd calm down? Usually between 2 and 3 years, as mental maturity catches up to physical size. The adolescent stage from about 1 to 2 years is the busiest, and steady exercise and training carry a Shepherd through it.
