The multiply-by-seven myth
For decades people multiplied a dog's age by seven to get "human years." It was never accurate. A one-year-old dog is not a 7-year-old child — it is closer to a teenager, already near full size. And a 10-year-old Great Dane is not the same age as a 10-year-old Chihuahua. Body size changes everything.
How tailculator works
Dogs age in three phases. The first year is steep — a six-month puppy is around ten human years. The second year adds roughly nine more. After that, each dog year adds a fixed amount that depends on the dog's size class: small dogs add about four human years per year, giant breeds closer to eight. tailculator uses your breed's size class to apply the right curve.
Common questions
Is the multiply-by-seven rule accurate?
No. The "one dog year equals seven human years" rule is a myth. Dogs age fast in their first two years, then the pace depends on body size — small dogs age slowly, giant dogs age quickly.
Why does breed size change the answer?
Larger dogs age faster than smaller dogs after they reach maturity. A six-year-old Great Dane is far older in human terms than a six-year-old Chihuahua, so tailculator uses your dog's size class.
How does the calculator handle puppies?
The first year of a dog's life is steeply non-linear — a six-month-old puppy is roughly ten human years old. The calculator models this puppy curve directly instead of using a flat formula.
What if I have a mixed-breed dog?
Choose "Mixed / I'm not sure" and enter your dog's adult weight. The calculator uses weight to pick the right size class.
