About the Brittany

The Brittany, originally the Brittany Spaniel until the AKC dropped 'spaniel' from the name in 1982, is a French sporting breed developed in the 19th-century Brittany region for versatile gundog work. Smaller than most pointers, the breed is athletic, biddable, and one of the most successful field-trial breeds in North America.

Caring for a Brittany

Exercise needs. Bred for full-day hunting work. The Brittany needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous daily activity. Field-bred lines may need more. Under-exercised Brittanys develop anxiety and destructive habits.
Hip dysplasia. OFA records show the breed has elevated hip dysplasia rates compared to other medium sporting dogs. Ask any breeder for OFA hip scores of the parents and grandparents before buying a puppy.
Epilepsy. Idiopathic epilepsy is documented in Brittanys at higher-than-average rates. Seizures typically emerge in young adulthood. Managed dogs can live full lifespans, but the condition requires lifelong medication and monitoring.
