About the Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a small spitz-type dog descended from larger Arctic working breeds and selectively bred down to a few kilograms in 18th-century Pomerania. Long-lived among toy breeds, the Pom thrives on company and tolerates apartment life.

Caring for a Pomeranian

Tracheal collapse. Small airways and a thin trachea make Pomeranians prone to tracheal collapse. Use a Y-front harness rather than a collar, and watch for honking coughs.
Dental care. Small jaws crowd 42 adult teeth, accelerating periodontal disease. Daily brushing and annual professional cleanings from age 2-3 are baseline care.
Patellar luxation. Slipping kneecaps are common in toy breeds. A hopping or skipping gait deserves veterinary assessment; mild cases manage with weight control, severe cases need surgery.
