About the Pug

The Pug is a small, sturdy companion breed with a distinctive wrinkled face and curled tail. One of the oldest dog breeds, Pugs were favoured by Chinese emperors before becoming European court dogs. Their flat face and prominent eyes drive most of their health considerations.

Caring for a Pug

Brachycephalic airway. Pugs have a compressed skull and narrow airway, which makes breathing harder than for most dogs. Avoid exercise in heat and watch for heavy snoring or laboured breathing at rest.
Prominent eyes. The shallow eye sockets leave Pug eyes vulnerable to ulcers and dryness. Check daily for redness or cloudiness and avoid rough play near the face.
Weight management. Pugs gain weight readily and tolerate it poorly because of the airway burden. Body condition score 4 or 5 on the 9-point scale is the target. Measure food, treat sparingly.

Pug questions

How long do Pugs live?

Pugs typically live 13 to 15 years according to AKC breed standards, longer than most other brachycephalic breeds.

When is a Pug considered a senior?

Pugs are generally considered senior around age 9 to 10.

Are Pugs healthy dogs?

Pugs have known vulnerabilities in their airway, eyes, and joints, but with attentive care many live well into their teens.
