About the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a small, muscular British breed developed in the Black Country of England from bull-and-terrier stock. Affectionately nicknamed the 'nanny dog' for its gentleness with children, the Staffie is courageous, people-loving, and sturdy.

Caring for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Inherited cataracts. The breed carries hereditary cataract and L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria, both with DNA tests available. Ask any breeder for clear test results on both parents.
Skin and mast cell tumours. Staffies have elevated rates of skin allergies and mast cell tumours. Check regularly for new lumps and have any that grow or change assessed promptly.
Weight and joints. The breed gains muscle and fat readily. Lean body condition protects the hips and elbows and reduces the load on a powerfully built frame.
