About the Cane Corso

The Cane Corso is a large Italian mastiff-type breed descended from Roman war dogs and later used to guard property and hunt large game. Powerful, intelligent, and intensely loyal to its family, the Corso is a serious working guardian that needs experienced handling.

Caring for a Cane Corso

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Universal concern in heavy large breeds. Controlled puppyhood growth on a large-breed diet and OFA scoring of breeding stock are the protective standards.
Bloat / GDV. Deep-chested build carries elevated bloat risk. Prophylactic gastropexy at spay or neuter is widely recommended, and owners should learn the warning signs of GDV.
Eyelid conditions. The breed is prone to entropion and ectropion, where eyelids roll inward or droop outward. Both are surgically correctable and worth checking for in puppies.
