About the Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is a giant English guardian breed created in the late 1800s by crossing the Mastiff with the Bulldog to produce a fast, silent gamekeeper's dog. Affectionate and calm with family despite the imposing size, the breed runs on the short biological clock typical of giant dogs.

Caring for a Bullmastiff

Cancer risk. Bullmastiffs have one of the higher breed cancer burdens, particularly lymphoma and mast cell tumours. Check for new lumps regularly and pursue early veterinary assessment.
Bloat / GDV. Deep-chested giant build carries high bloat risk. Prophylactic gastropexy at spay or neuter substantially lowers the danger, and knowing the warning signs is essential.
Joint and growth management. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common. Slow, controlled growth on a large-breed puppy diet through the first two years and lean adult body condition are the protective interventions.

Bullmastiff questions

How long do Bullmastiffs live?

Bullmastiffs typically live 7 to 9 years per AKC breed standards, a short range driven by giant-breed biology.

When is a Bullmastiff considered a senior?

Bullmastiffs are generally considered senior around age 5 to 6.

Why do Bullmastiffs live such short lives?

Giant-breed biology runs on a faster clock. The breed's size accelerates orthopaedic wear, raises cancer risk, and concentrates emergencies like bloat into a shorter window.
