About the Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman Pinscher is a sleek, athletic large breed developed in late-19th-century Germany by tax collector Louis Dobermann as a protection dog. Loyal and intelligent, the breed's lifespan is dominated by one inherited cardiac condition: dilated cardiomyopathy.

Caring for a Doberman Pinscher

Dilated cardiomyopathy. Dobermans have one of the highest breed-specific rates of DCM. Annual cardiac screening with Holter monitoring and echocardiogram from age 3 is the Doberman Pinscher Club of America protocol.
Von Willebrand disease. An inherited bleeding disorder is common in Dobermans. DNA testing of breeding stock is standard; ask any breeder for results.
Hip dysplasia and weight. Like most large breeds, joint health responds to lean body condition and controlled puppyhood growth. Feed a large-breed puppy diet by measured weight.
