About the Maltese

The Maltese is one of the oldest toy breeds, descended from spitz-type dogs of central Mediterranean islands and depicted on Greek pottery from the 4th century BC. Long-lived and devoted, the breed thrives indoors and forms strong attachments to a single household.

Caring for a Maltese

Dental care. A tiny jaw crowds 42 adult teeth, accelerating periodontal disease. Daily brushing from puppyhood and annual professional cleanings are baseline care.
Tear staining. The pale coat shows the rust-coloured discharge that all dogs produce. Daily face wiping with a damp cloth, plus filtered water, prevents staining and irritation.
Patellar luxation. Slipping kneecaps are common in toy breeds. Watch for hopping or skipping gait; weight control plus controlled exercise on soft surfaces protects the joint.
