About the Saint Bernard

The Saint Bernard is a giant working breed developed by monks at the Great St Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps for alpine rescue. Gentle, patient, and famously good with children, the breed carries the short lifespan and orthopaedic load common to the largest dogs.

Caring for a Saint Bernard

Bloat / GDV. One of the highest-risk breeds for gastric dilatation-volvulus. Prophylactic gastropexy at spay or neuter is strongly advised, and owners must recognise the warning signs.
Hip and elbow dysplasia. Very common in a breed this heavy. Controlled puppyhood growth, lean body condition, and OFA scoring of breeding stock are the protective standards.
Heat sensitivity. The dense double coat and large body make Saint Bernards prone to overheating. Avoid exercise in warm weather and provide cool resting areas and ample water.

Saint Bernard questions

How long do Saint Bernards live?

Saint Bernards typically live 8 to 10 years per AKC breed standards, a short range typical of giant breeds.

When is a Saint Bernard considered a senior?

Saint Bernards are generally considered senior around age 5 to 6.

Why do Saint Bernards live such short lives?

Giant-breed biology runs on a faster clock. The breed's great size accelerates orthopaedic wear, raises cancer and cardiac risk, and concentrates emergencies like bloat into a shorter window.
