About the Vizsla

The Vizsla is a medium Hungarian sporting breed developed for falconry-assisted hunting on the Pannonian Plain. Athletic, intensely affectionate, and rust-coloured throughout, the breed is famously velcro-clingy to its people and physically capable of working long days in the field.

Caring for a Vizsla

Exercise needs. Bred for all-day field work, the Vizsla requires 60 to 90 minutes of structured daily exercise. Under-exercised Vizslas develop anxiety, destructive chewing, and stress-related health issues.
Separation anxiety. The breed forms unusually strong attachments and is widely regarded as one of the most prone to separation anxiety. Plan for company, doggy daycare, or training from puppyhood for households where the dog will be alone often.
Cancer screening. Vizslas have elevated rates of lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma. Annual senior bloodwork and prompt veterinary attention for lumps, lethargy, or appetite changes catch most cases at a more treatable stage.

Vizsla questions

How long do Vizslas live?

Vizslas typically live 12 to 15 years per AKC breed standards, longer than most medium-large sporting breeds.

When is a Vizsla considered a senior?

Vizslas are generally considered senior around age 9 to 10.

Are Vizslas healthy dogs?

Generally yes. The main concerns are cancer in older age and anxiety-driven health issues in under-exercised dogs.
