About the Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a small white companion descended from medieval water spaniels and refined as a French and Spanish court dog. Cheerful, hypoallergenic-coated, and remarkably long-lived for any breed, the Bichon thrives on human company.

Caring for a Bichon Frise

Coat maintenance. The double curly coat sheds minimally but mats quickly. Professional grooming every four to six weeks plus brushing two to three times a week prevents painful matting.
Allergies and skin. Bichons have an elevated rate of atopic dermatitis. Watch for repeated scratching at ears, paws, or belly; consult a vet for elimination diets or immunotherapy.
Bladder stones. Small-breed urinary anatomy concentrates stone formation. Encourage water intake with wet food or broth and request annual urinalysis from middle age onward.
